12-26-09 A discussion on why we need Tafsirs or Quranic commentaries
Allah can communicate to us directly. There are also countless ways and paths that lead to Allah. The Qur'an is Allah's word and is the most elevated divine communication to all of creation. How do we understand the place and role of scholars and tafsir (commentary on the Qur'an), such as the Risale-i Nur?
Throughout all time the order and system of revelation, narrations and the duty of protecting the pillars of faith are organised through the will of Allah. The system of learning and scholarship of marifatullah (knowledge of Allah) is not a matter left to individual endeavours without order or design.
This discussion focuses on why we cannot exclusively rely on our own inspirations from our readings of the Qur'an and hadith for guidance. It details the wisdom behind the selection and role of scholars, mujaddids, mujtahids and tafsirs, such as the Risale-i Nur in this age. This discussion will breakdown the dangers inherent in exclusively relying on one's individual inspiration and thoughts and will provide a convincing explanation of the position and role of the Risale-i Nur in this time and age.
